3.1 Buildings
3.2 Power
3.3 Chips
3.4 Servers
3.5 Software
All software architectures, development methods, and code choices have sustainability implications.
The Green Software Foundation is a collaboration between some of the world’s largest software firms and consultants. These include Microsoft, GitHub, Thoughtworks and Accenture. It is a nonprofit organization established with the Linux Foundation and the Joint Development Foundation Projects LLC, that aims to build a trusted ecosystem of people, standards, tooling, and leading practices forbuilding green software.

It sets out a number of principles:
1. Build applications that are carbon efficient.
2. Build applications that are hardware efficient.
3. Reduce the amount of data and the distance it must travel across the network.
4. Build carbon-aware applications.
5. Focus on step-by-step optimizations that increase the overall carbon efficiency.
Whatever types of software are being deployed and however it is being developed it is important that the sustainability implications of decisions are recognized. Green software standards will come.
